Denver Broncos Secure Overtime Victory Against Seattle Seahawks Despite Offensive Struggles
Kicker Wil Lutz delivered a game-winning 53-yard field goal in overtime, sealing a 17-14 win for the Denver Broncos over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night, a game marked by stark contrasts in offensive performance.

Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz connected on a 53-yard field goal in overtime, securing a hard-fought 17-14 victory against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday evening. The dramatic finish saw the Broncos overcome a second-half offensive slump.
Overtime Drama and Decisive Play
In the sudden-death overtime period, Seattle gained possession first. Facing a critical third-and-7 from their own 28-yard line, Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold attempted to force a pass into double coverage along the sideline. Broncos cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, anticipating the play, stepped in front for a crucial interception, positioning Denver at Seattle’s 43-yard line.
Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton then employed a strategic approach, calling three consecutive run plays to manage the clock and center the ball for Lutz. The veteran kicker then calmly converted the lengthy field goal, clinching the win. This decisive clock management stood out, especially following recent NFL games marred by strategic errors.
A Tale of Two Halves for Denver's Offense
The game began auspiciously for Denver, with Payton’s offensive scheme appearing perfectly executed for the initial 20 minutes. The Broncos controlled the time of possession and built a 14-3 lead by halftime, concluding two methodical touchdown drives with short runs from J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey.
However, the second half presented a starkly different picture. Denver’s offense seemed disjointed, struggling to generate any momentum. Quarterback Bo Nix finished the night with a mere 107 passing yards and posed no deep threat downfield. Over eight second-half possessions, the Broncos managed only 36 total yards, frequently going three-and-out and keeping punter Jeremy Crawshaw exceptionally busy.
Seahawks' Resilient Comeback and Defensive Stands
Despite Denver's early lead, Seattle mounted a formidable comeback in the fourth quarter. George Holani scored a touchdown, and Darnold completed a two-point conversion pass to Rashid Shaheed, narrowing the deficit to 14-11. After Denver's offense stalled again with just over a minute remaining, Jason Myers kicked a 34-yard field goal with three seconds left, forcing the game into overtime.
The primary reason Denver remained in contention was the stellar performance of their defense, led by coordinator Vance Joseph. Playing without key cornerback Patrick Surtain II, the Broncos’ front seven consistently pressured Darnold, sacking him five times and forcing turnovers whenever Seattle threatened. Nik Bonitto stripped wide receiver Rashid Shaheed in scoring territory, Kris Abrams-Draine secured a fourth-quarter interception, and McMillian delivered the game-sealing pick in overtime.
Seattle managed to accumulate 353 total yards, with Jaxon Smith-Njigba catching 12 passes for 134 yards. However, three critical turnovers ultimately negated their offensive efforts.
Looking Ahead for Denver
While the victory was hard-fought, Bo Nix and the Broncos’ offense have significant areas to address. Head Coach Payton now has a 10-day mini-bye period before hosting the Arizona Cardinals, providing an opportunity to refine the team's ability to move the ball effectively. Despite the offensive struggles, the win counts in the standings, moving the Broncos to a 4-2 record, placing them behind the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.
Ultimately, Denver’s defense played a pivotal role in securing a game that, by offensive metrics, they had little business winning, with a critical assist from a late turnover by Darnold.
