Ex-Biden Aide Projected to Unseat Republican Incumbent in Pivotal New York House Race

A former official from the Biden administration is anticipated to emerge victorious over Representative Mike Lawler, a New York Republican, in what has been identified as one of the most keenly observed contests of the 2026 election cycle.

Cait Conley, a military veteran with prior service on the White House National Security Council, is poised to join Congress next year, having defeated the two-term incumbent for the seat, according to projections released late Thursday by The Associated Press.

Various electoral analyses had indicated that this particular seat was a strong prospect for a Democratic gain.

In the lead-up to Election Day, both major political parties allocated significant resources to the campaign for New York’s 17th Congressional District. The outcome was broadly considered crucial to both parties' aspirations for securing control of the House of Representatives.

The district, situated immediately north of New York City, previously voted for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.

Campaign Dynamics and Divisive Issues

Throughout his campaign, Representative Lawler navigated a delicate political balance, aiming to align himself with former President Donald Trump while simultaneously cultivating an image as an independent legislative voice.

The contest itself was characterized by sharp disagreements on key policy areas, notably immigration enforcement and taxation.

The Immigration Debate

Among those who publicly supported Lawler were the parents of Sheridan Gorman, a college student from his district tragically killed in Chicago during an outing with friends. The individual accused of her killing is an undocumented immigrant who had reportedly been arrested previously for shoplifting but was released without a federal immigration detainer, a consequence of Chicago’s sanctuary city policies.

Both Lawler and the Gorman family cited her death as evidence that certain Democratic-supported sanctuary policies—which are also implemented in New York—pose significant dangers to American citizens. Lawler contended that his opponent, Conley, would not take effective measures to address the impacts of unauthorized immigration.

Conley, in response, issued a condemnation of Gorman’s killing and affirmed her opposition to illegal immigration. However, she has refrained from explicitly criticizing sanctuary laws.

Conley’s professional background includes serving as the counterterrorism director on the White House National Security Council between 2021 and 2023. She then spent the remainder of former President Joe Biden’s tenure as a senior advisor focused on election security at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).
