Joel Embiid Dismisses "Sacrifice" Narrative for Philadelphia 76ers' Star-Laden Roster
As the NBA regular season approaches, the 76ers' All-Star center believes the team's top players can thrive without compromising their individual strengths.

The Philadelphia 76ers are entering the upcoming NBA season with a roster brimming with high-profile talent, widely considered a contender for the championship. The team significantly bolstered its lineup this offseason, notably acquiring Jaylen Brown in a major trade and securing LeBron James, who chose Philadelphia after exploring various options in free agency.
These additions join long-standing 76ers stalwarts Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, both of whom have spent their entire professional careers with the franchise. With such a concentration of star power, discussions have emerged questioning how the team will manage to keep all its key players content throughout the season. However, Embiid firmly believes the squad can achieve its goals without requiring its stars to make substantial personal sacrifices or drastically alter their established playing styles.
Embiid's Vision for Team Play
Following the team's final preseason game on Friday, Embiid articulated his perspective on team dynamics.
I'm against the concept of sacrificing,he stated, further clarifying his view:
I think the way I explained it was you do what you do best, and we're going to support you. ... I don't think anybody has to take a back seat. This suggests an approach where individual strengths are maximized and complemented rather than diminished for the collective.
Preseason Performance and Early Adjustments
The 76ers' preseason finale offered an initial glimpse into head coach Nick Nurse's strategic vision for the star-studded ensemble as the regular season approaches next week. Four of Philadelphia's prominent players participated in the exhibition, while rising talent VJ Edgecombe was sidelined.
Embiid, in particular, showcased formidable early-season form during Friday night's contest, concluding with an impressive 27 points, eight rebounds, and a memorable highlight-reel dunk.
Despite Embiid's strong outing, the Boston Celtics ultimately secured a narrow 125-120 overtime victory, bringing both teams' preseason schedules to a close. Throughout the game, Philadelphia's lineup, rich with star players, occasionally appeared to lack cohesion. Jaylen Brown identified spacing issues as a contributing factor to some of the team's turnovers, an area the 76ers still have time to refine before competitive play begins.
Reflecting on the team's current state, Brown remarked,
We're not where we want to be yet. So that's just a part of it. It's a part of coming together, a new group with a bunch of guys, different style, but we just got to keep getting better every day.
LeBron James echoed Brown's sentiments regarding the team's ongoing development, though neither player expressed significant concern about the 76ers' eventual ability to gel. James commented,
We're getting there. I mean, obviously we are a couple of weeks in, so we're still working on our rhythm, working on our kinks, and it's not going to be perfect.
The 2026-27 NBA season is set to commence on Tuesday, featuring three high-profile matchups. Among these is the Philadelphia 76ers' inaugural game, a road trip to Madison Square Garden to challenge the reigning champions, the New York Knicks.
