Crowdsourcing Could Provide Breakthrough in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance, Investigator Says
After more than 21 weeks of investigation, a former NYPD detective turned private investigator believes public tips could be crucial to finding Nancy Guthrie.
U.S.·

More than 21 weeks have passed since Nancy Guthrie's suspected abduction, during which time the FBI and Google successfully recovered Nest doorbell video footage, two individuals were detained and subsequently released without charges, and thousands of tips were thoroughly investigated. Despite these extensive efforts, her current whereabouts remain unknown.
Herman Weisberg, a former detective with the New York City Police Department now working as a prominent private investigator, holds the view that a single phone call could still lead to a resolution in the ongoing case.
With the investigation extending beyond 150 days and public updates from authorities becoming less frequent, Weisberg contends that the significant public interest surrounding the case could ultimately prove to be one of the most valuable assets for investigators.
The Power of Public Tips
Weisberg points to several high-profile cases where citizen involvement played a critical role. These include the case of Gabby Petito, where members of the public reviewing their personal dashcam recordings provided vital clues that helped investigators locate her remains in a secluded Wyoming campground.
Other instances where public assistance was instrumental in solving cases include the Boston Marathon bombing, where tipsters reported the movements of the Tsarnaev brothers following the deadly attack, and the abduction of Elizabeth Smart. Smart, kidnapped as a teenager, was rescued after alert Utah residents recognized her suspected captors from news reports and contacted law enforcement.
"Crowdsourcing wins cases these days, you know, all the armchair sleuths and the true crime fans that are out there," Weisberg stated. "Maybe one of them is like what I always say, is the one that looks outside their window and said, 'That's strange, that car's been parked out there too long. It's got Arizona plates.' You know, it's a stolen car. Get the police to come."
Technology's Role and Unexpected Challenges
While expressing surprise that advanced digital forensics have not yet resolved the case, Weisberg acknowledges that not every investigation unfolds as expected for law enforcement.
"Actually, I'm pretty shocked that this case didn't come down to technology," he remarked. "A perfect example is that Kohberger case in Idaho. Technology was the case breaker for them, but anything can happen in a case like this. I think the old expression, three can keep a secret if two are dead. If this was a solo perpetrator of this crime, we lose a big advantage of somebody else being able to point the finger here. Whatever it is, my personal idea on this is it was a crime that went very wrong from the beginning. We didn't have some of the advantages, some of investigative opportunities there because this didn't play out the way that the perpetrator intended it to."
Conversely, Weisberg suggests that, similar to the Kohberger investigation, authorities might have made more progress than is publicly known.
"They could be working on a lead right now," he added.
Ongoing Appeals for Information
Should current leads not yield a breakthrough, investigators and the Guthrie family continue to appeal to the public for any relevant information. Combined rewards for details in the Guthrie case exceed $1.2 million, with the family alone offering $1 million for information leading directly to her recovery.
Savannah Guthrie, Nancy Guthrie's daughter and co-host of the "Today" show, urges anyone with information regarding her mother's case to contact the FBI by dialing 1-800-CALL-FBI.
