Paris McDonald's Ransacked as Cost-of-Living Protests Escalate into Widespread Looting and Violence
Demonstrations against the rising cost of living in the French capital have devolved into riots, leaving numerous businesses, including restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores, extensively damaged.

A McDonald's restaurant in Paris sustained significant damage and was left in disarray after demonstrations concerning the rising cost of living escalated into widespread civil unrest and looting. The violence targeted various establishments, including restaurants, cafes, and grocery stores throughout the French capital, leading authorities to impose curfews in two areas.
The McDonald's located on Boulevard de Magenta, near Gare de l'Est, suffered shattered windows and extensive interior destruction. Reports indicated that computer screens were broken, and an ice cream machine continued to dispense vanilla onto a floor covered in ketchup. A security guard recounted that intruders even attempted to prepare french fries before a man and his dog managed to drive approximately 20 individuals out of the establishment.
Widespread Damage to Local Businesses
The American fast-food giant was far from the only business affected by the destruction. As unrest swept across Paris, a local cafe was burned out, a wine shop was demolished, and several supermarkets were among the targeted businesses.
La Barrique, a neighborhood cafe situated near Place de la République, was particularly hard hit, completely burning down. The son of the cafe's owners reported that his mother was inside the premises when the attack occurred and was later hospitalized with a head injury.
Grocery stores also faced significant impact. Retailers such as Franprix, Monoprix, Picard, and Carrefour City locations were targeted during the disturbances. At a Franprix on Rue Beaurepaire, close to Place de la République, shelves were emptied, and products were either stolen or crushed on the floor. Looters were observed departing supermarkets carrying bags filled with food, juice, and alcoholic beverages.
An Intermarché Express on Boulevard de Magenta was also subjected to looting. A news crew reporting near the supermarket stated they were assaulted by masked individuals. Additionally, a Nicolas wine shop on Boulevard de Magenta was destroyed, with broken bottles and wine spilling across the area outside the store.
Underlying Tensions and Public Reaction
This widespread destruction followed Saturday's demonstrations, which were initially organized to protest the rising cost of living and other grievances.
Ostrow, a Paris native whose grandparents survived the Holocaust, voiced concerns regarding what she described as increasing antisemitism and the role of social media in fostering hostility. She suggested that some demonstrators embrace political causes without fully grasping their historical context.
Those kids and most of those people couldn't point to Israel on the world map if it hit them in the face.
On social media platforms, many expressed their dismay about the unfolding events in France.
I have nothing but disgust for anyone trying to justify this. Let me say it, the ones suffering the consequences are ordinary French people, not the government. It's ordinary citizens who will pay for this, whose cars were burned, whose businesses and homes were looted, and whose physical integrity were threatened.
Another user commented,
These are not protests anymore.
In response to the escalating situation, several European governments are now advising travelers planning to visit France to avoid large gatherings and exercise increased caution during their stay.
