A recent township council meeting in New Jersey took a dramatic turn when the Republican mayor of Pemberton Township charged toward a resident, requiring several individuals to intervene and restrain him. Video footage of the chaotic Wednesday night session captured Mayor Matthew Bianchini shouting threats at the man.
The resident involved in the confrontation, Michael Sawka, is reportedly a vocal critic of Mayor Bianchini, according to WPVI-TV. The video shows Mayor Bianchini lunging toward Sawka before being pulled away by others present. As he was being removed from the immediate area, Bianchini could be heard yelling, "I'm getting you," along with other profanities and threats directed at Sawka.
Tense Exchange Leads to Physical Confrontation
The incident unfolded while a recently terminated township employee was addressing the council. Mayor Bianchini and members of his family, who were also in attendance, informed WPVI that Sawka and another resident had made disrespectful remarks toward the mayor's wife and daughter, who were seated in the room.
Footage from the meeting shows Sawka gesturing toward the back of the room, followed by an obscene gesture directed at Mayor Bianchini, moments before the mayor initiated his charge. Following the meeting, Mayor Bianchini acknowledged that he had lost control of his emotions.
"I just basically snapped," Bianchini told WPVI. "I hate to put it this way, but it's a long time coming."
The mayor conceded that his behavior was inappropriate. "I should not have said that," he stated to the station. "That was wrong. It was in the heat of the moment. I'm not gonna get anybody."
However, he also offered a strong justification for his actions, emphasizing protection for his family.
"Was it wrong? Absolutely. Was it justified? Absolutely. And I would do it again if I had to," Bianchini asserted, adding, "Don't attack my family."
Mayor Acknowledges Losing Temper, Resident Files Complaint
For his part, Michael Sawka denied making any comments directed at Mayor Bianchini's family. He also stated that he remained seated and composed throughout the entire confrontation.
"I'm just sitting there. I never got up. I sat there the whole time. I was calm the whole time," Sawka told WPVI.
On Thursday, Sawka proceeded to file a municipal court complaint against Mayor Bianchini, seeking charges for assault and terroristic threats, as reported by WPVI.
In response to the incident, the Pemberton Township Democratic Club issued a statement asserting that the township deserves leadership capable of maintaining professionalism and composure. The club encouraged residents to participate in the upcoming election, where Mayor Bianchini is seeking re-election to his position.
