Staten Island Firefighters Save Historic 'Godfather' Church from Raging Warehouse Blaze
Over 200 emergency personnel battled a four-alarm fire in a vacant Staten Island warehouse, preventing its spread to nearby historic structures, including a church featured in the classic film 'The Godfather.'

A historic New York City church, recognized for its appearance in the iconic film "The Godfather," was successfully protected by firefighters as a four-alarm blaze consumed a neighboring vacant warehouse.
More than 200 firefighters and emergency medical services personnel rapidly deployed to the Mount Loretto complex in Staten Island after a significant fire erupted within an empty warehouse around 5:45 p.m. on a Saturday evening. FDNY Chief of Operations Kevin Woods addressed reporters later that night, detailing the challenging conditions.
"There is heavy, heavy damage to this structure, the roof did collapse, and right now we’re maintaining a collapse zone around that structure," Woods stated.
Upon their arrival, emergency units faced intense flames engulfing the building and immediately transitioned to a defensive strategy. Woods explained that "multiple large-caliber stream tower ladders and handlines" were deployed to combat the inferno.
Emergency Response and Containment
The warehouse, located at 6581 Hylan Boulevard, had been unoccupied for five years. It stands in close proximity to several other buildings on the expansive Mount Loretto grounds, which include two educational institutions and the significant Old Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne.
This ornate Catholic church gained widespread recognition from its exterior shots during the baptism sequence in the 1972 cinematic masterpiece, "The Godfather." The church itself had a history of resilience, having been largely destroyed by a fire in 1973, though its façade endured, leading to its reconstruction three years later.
Fire crews on Saturday managed to bring the intense fire under control by approximately 8:30 p.m., crucially preventing its spread to any of the adjacent structures. Chief Woods highlighted the difficulty posed by weather conditions.
"It’s very windy out here tonight. Our units did a great job with many of the flying embers, preventing additional structures from going on fire," Woods remarked.
During the operation, one firefighter sustained a minor burn injury to their leg. The exact cause of the extensive warehouse fire is currently under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
