DSA Leader Dismisses $49 Trillion Socialist Policy Cost Estimate as 'Outrageous' and 'Made-Up'

A prominent leader within the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has strongly rejected a White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) projection that the organization's proposed policies, including universal healthcare and student loan forgiveness, would incur a $49 trillion cost for taxpayers. The DSA figure, whose incoming legislative members are set to prioritize economic accessibility, characterized the substantial price tag as "outrageous" and a "made-up number."

During an interview, the DSA leader suggested that the White House, which she noted holds an unfavorable view of the group, "managed to come up with some math that made us look bad." She affirmed, "But we don't agree with these numbers."

The CEA's comprehensive report estimated that the DSA's ambitious policy agenda could amount to approximately $355,000 per American household over the coming decade.

Elaborating on the calculation of these costs, the DSA leader explained that "there's no, like, one, solid number because it depends on what pieces we can build in the meantime." She further clarified, "So it's about building up programs and then sunsetting old, bad programs, and that number is going to shift as we pass various things."

She continued, "I'm not going to give you a solid number. That's not what I'm here to do. What I'm here to do is talk about how we collectively can democratically decide how we want our money to be spent."

Contesting Economic Projections

Beyond disputing the cost estimates for their domestic agenda, the DSA figure also criticized the magnitude of U.S. military expenditures. She contended that federal resources currently allocated to global military operations would be more effectively utilized if redirected toward the DSA's core policy objectives, such as granting amnesty for undocumented immigrants and dismantling the Senate.

She asserted, "We don't believe in having 800 U.S. military bases around the world. That is an insane amount of money to spend… Our military spending is outrageous, and most of that money is going to defense contractors. It is making a handful of billionaires richer."

In response to her assertions regarding excessive military spending, an interviewer noted that the U.S. defense budget stands at $961 billion, a figure significantly lower than the estimated $47 trillion required to fund the DSA's proposed policies.

Addressing the cost of providing healthcare for all, the DSA leader stated, "We do agree that it will cost money to provide healthcare to everyone, but it will cost less money than we spend on the military and on these illegal wars right now."
